I got to spend the day reconnecting with some old friends today. I used to be a regular, participating member of the SCA until a few years ago when my life and our income took a nosedive, but today I got to visit with friends and play again and it felt great. The event was the Great Western War (which has been going on all week), and although I had wanted to spend the entire week camping and participating in the event, it wasn’t in the cards for us financially this year. Luckily, a good friend and his son who live near me decided to drive the 2 hours from our neighborhood to the event site today and I made arrangements to catch a ride up and back with them. Grif and Liam didn’t come with me because they aren’t that interested in SCA stuff anymore and preferred to spend the day playing computer games and visiting the bookstore.
I was able to catch up with several friends I hadn’t seen in many months, and had a great time doing it. I admit to a slight twinge of guilt at enjoying myself without having to worry about where the guys were, what they were doing and, or whether or not they were having a good time. Part of me is sad that I seem to enjoy myself more at these events when they’re not around, but another part of me enjoys the freedom of being an independent woman 8-).
